iPad 2 benchmarks show impressive gains over original model

One of the first things many iPad 2 upgraders noticed was that the new device seemed very fast in comparison to the original iPad. Over at GigaOM, blogger Geoffrey Goetz ran benchmarks on an iPhone 4, an iPad, and an iPad 2 (all running iOS 4.3) to show how speedy the new iPad really is.

As you can see in the chart above, the iPad 2 consistently outperformed the Apple A4-powered iPad and iPhone 4 in every test. Using the GeekBench tests from Primate Labs, the iPad 2 was about 64% faster than its predecessor in overall results. Likewise, the Gague benchmarks showed an overall performance gain of about 56%, while BenchTest clocked in with a 63% improvement.

Goetz noted that he personally believed that his iPhone 4 was faster than his original iPad, a belief that the benchmarks proved to be incorrect. He also compared iOS 4.3 benchmarks submitted by a large sampling of GeekBench users, all of which supported his assertion that the iPad 2 performance gains are "stunning."

The GeekBench numbers show the iPad 2 to be roughly as powerful as a G4-based 15" PowerBook or Mac mini, but as Goetz summarizes in his post, "I really don't think that raw performance alone is where the focus needs to be anymore."

iPhone 4 Unlock Delayed, Apple Beats Devs

Unfortunately, MuscleNerd the well-known iPhone hacker has announced some bad news about iPhone 4 unlock status, he mentioned that it will take longer than they want to finished unlocking task for iPhone 4 basebands above 01.59.00.

Ultrasn0w unlockers should know the drill! Don't let iTunes trick you into installing today's 4.3 iOS. Just say no!
Sorry, there's no news on the i4 unlock for those who lost 01.59 (or never had it). It's taking longer than we wanted :(
So if you rely on ultrasn0w to unlock your device, don't upgrade to iOS 4.3, and don't let iTunes trick you into installing it, just say no!

Diffidently, this news should disappoint who are waiting eagerly for unlock their devices on 2.10.04 , 3.10.01 basebands, but for who have unlocked devices, we hope that dev-team will be able to upgrade PwnageTool to be able to upgrade to iOS 4.3 with preserving the unlockable baseband. let's wait and see.

iOS 4.2.5 on Verizon iPhone 4 Hands On (Video)

Couple of hours ago, Verizon iPhone 4 appeared in the New York City event and we'll get it in our hands starting early February 2011 but some high profile bloggers on Engadget got Verizon iPhone 4 before it's being in others hands.

However, Verizon iPhone 4 is running iOS 4.2.5. Engadget has spotted the “Personal Hotspot” feature in iOS 4.2.5, running on the said handset. The feature is built in the Settings app, as can be seen in the screenshot above and hands on video below:

Jailbreak Verizon iPhone 4 Possible with SHAtter or Limera1n?

Interesting question to ask! Will the newly released Verizon iPhone 4 be jailbreakable? Well well well, Apple should fix death grip issues in the new Verizon iPhone 4 and to do this, it should port redesigned antenna system so that it works on CDMA network.

As most of you know, Limera1n exploit by iPhone hacker George Hotz can jailbreak any iOS device with the current bootrom so if Verizon iPhone 4 has the same current bootrom of iPhone 4, limera1n can be used to jailbreak it.

However, if the bootrom is different, Chronic Dev Team have their own exploit known as SHAtter which was saved in case if Apple changed the bootrom.

In brief, either Verizon iPhone 4 carries the current bootrom or new bootrom, it'll be absolutely jailbroken once it ships to the hackers. Stay tuned for more information as it comes !

Update iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 While Preserving Baseband [How to Guide]

Most of iPhone 4 users didn't update to iOS 4.2.1 as it updates baseband and make it not unlockable. So in case you got an iPhone 4 on older 01.59.00 baseband, we have been tipped off about a solution for that. The below steps will guide you to update iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 while preserving the same older baseband 01.59.00 and unlock it.
STEP 1: Right click on Notepad from Start - Programs - Accessories, then choose Run as administrator from the contextual popup menu.

STEP 2: Once notepad opens, select Open from the File menu then navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and open the hosts file as shown:

STEP 3: Now add 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com to end of the file as shown in the screenshot below:

STEP 4: Now, you'll have to restore your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 by clicking on the iPhone icon on the left sidebar of iTunes then hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and click on “Restore” then release the alt button, Now Select the original iOS 4.2.1 firmware found here.

STEP 5: iTunes should pop-up with some error as error 1013, 1015 or some other error. This indicates that you have done it successfully, hit OK to continue.

STEP 6: Now you iPhone will stuck in Recovery Mode showing the well-known "Connect to iTunes" message. You have to run TinyUmbrella (Windows - Mac) or RecBoot 2.1 for Mac OS Xto get out of recovery mode.

You'll now be able to jailbreak your iPhone 4 using Redsn0w 0.9.6 for tethered and Redsn0w 0.9.7 for untethered one then unlock it using Ultrasn0w carrier unlock. [Thanks @AppleBullet for hat tip, via @Ven000m]

CallLock Solves iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor Woes by Locking iPhone Screen During a Call [Jailbreak App]

CallLock is really handy tweak that locks your iPhone screen during a phone call to prevent from accidentlly pressing buttons that may dial, hold, or hangup a phone call by mistake. This tweak is very useful for iPhone 4 users who have a faulty proximity sensor in their devices.

To enjoy this tweak, your device must be jailbroken on iOS 4.x, follow our guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 or use Limera1n iOS 4.1 jailbreak. Once jailbroken, navigate to Cydia and purchase CallLock for $0.99 from the Cydia Store.

CallLock will override the default action of Power button during a call to lock the screen instead of the normal end call action. You can also enable CallLock automatically from inside your Seetings app so that no new icons will be added to your home screen and will automatically lock your screen as soon as a incoming or outgoing call is connected. So, does this handy tweak really solves proximity sensor woes in iPhone 4?

In case you are living under rocks, you may don't know that Ultrasn0w carrier unlock will be updated tomorrow (this Sunday) to provide a full unlock for iPhone 3GS / 3G on baseband 05.15.04 and lower ones. Anyway, iPhone 4 unlockers will have to wait a bit longer but we have good news for you too.

[WARNING] Apple Has Put a Baseband Requirement on iOS

Apple has release iOS 4.2.1, but not alone, it has merged some traps with this version for jailbreakers and unlockers with the introduction of a baseband requirement for iOS starting from the newly released iOS 4.2.1. Precisely, if you are using Saurik’s server or tiny umbrella and trying to restore 4.2.1 on an iPhone 4, you will end up in recovery mode and tiny umbrella will not be able to pull you out of recovery.
TheBigBoss: It seems that Apple has decided to put a baseband requirement on iOS. So at this point, if you are using Saurik’s server or tiny umbrella and trying to restore 4.2.1 on an iPhone 4, you will end up in recovery mode and tiny umbrella will not be able to pull you out of recovery. In this case, you will have to restore 4.1 again or you will have to restore 4.2.1 stock and be tether jailbroken. (Of course, I recommend 4.1 and not bothering with 4.2.1 at all). If you are an unlocker, this is a no brainier. Do not update to 4.2.1 even to test it at this point.
So we highly recommend to stay on iOS 4.1 and wait until the situation became stable, specially who want preserve their unlock. for now you can check iOS 4.2.1 features form here, and its jailbreak guide with redsn0w 0.9.6b4 from here. Stay tuned

Use iPhone 4 Camera to Measure your Heart Rate

Have you ever wanted to measure your heart rate? using iPhone 4? and for free? Yes, Heart Rate is a new entry into the App Store that measures how fast your heart is beating using iPhone 4-only camera (not for you 3G and 3GS users).
The app is very accurate as it measures your BPM’s but the developers of the app noted that the app is intended for fun only, and should not be used for any medical purposes. Anyway, my heart rate is usually between 60 and 70, what's yours?

Real White iPhone 4s on China's Grey Market ?

The Chinese web site Giz-China has published a photos claiming that there are genuine white iPhone 4s is being sold in the China's grey market (a.k.a black markets). Many digital retailers in China have been stockpiling the white devices due to its big profits.
About pricing, it starts from around 5500 Yuan ($828) and rising to nearly 8000 Yuan ($1204) for the base model 16Gb version and it's higher than these for the 32Gb models. Of course these prices are more expensive than the official retail price of the regular black iPhone 4.
This type of illegal resale has been a persistent problem for Apple. In 2008, the New York Times estimated that there were 1.4 million ill-gotten iPhones in the world. At this time last year, the Wall Street Journal estimated that number had grown to 2 million in China alone.

Get Physical Keyboard on your iPhone 4 with “Keyboard Buddy Case”

Apple iPhone 4 owners who have been envious of BlackBerry owners with the integrated thumb keyboard or Droid owners with their sliding keyboard can put an end to all that envy with Boxwave’s newest case.
Keyboard Buddy Case accessory adds a bit of protection to your smartphone and also provide a thumb keyboard that slides out in landscape mode, mimicking the look and functionality of the Android-powered Motorola Droid and Droid 2 on Verizon Wireless’s network.

The Boxwave accessory provides a four-row keyboard with a dedicated row for the number keys; however, the spacebar is squeezed into the last letter row on the bottom as depicted in the picture.

Keyboard Buddy Case provides up to 45 days of use on a USB cable for charging and will connect to your iPhone 4 via a Bluetooth connection. The device normally retails for $80, but is currently on sale for $70 through the company’s website.
