Seventh Beta of 10.6.7 Now Available in Mac Dev Center

Earlier today Apple seeded the seventh beta of OS X 10.6.7 (a Snow Leopard update, not Lion) and is available for developers at the Mac Dev Center. The build number is 10J868.

There are no known issues with the build and as has been a similar case with previous betas, Apple is asking developers to focus on Safari, Mac App Store, AirPort, Bonjour, SMB, and Graphics Drivers.

JBL's On Air Wireless AirPlay speaker dock gets official, unavailable to purchase

When we First peeked this AirPlay-enabled speaker dock, we were admittedly excited to see how things would turn out after it made rounds through the FCC.

JBL just tossed up the splash page for the On Air Wireless speaker and we've gotta say -- it looks to be a promising means of streaming your jams. The system connects wirelessly to your AirPlay-enabled Mac and iOS device on 4.2 or later and packs a screen that'll display the track info of the song you're rocking out to.

What's more, the rounded grill sports a dual alarm clock, FM radio, and a USB port for future firmware updates. As you might have surmised by now, the dock is not yet available for purchase and there's no word on price. If you're interested, though, be sure to hit the source link, sign up for more info and get ready to headbang this spring.

First peeked:
JBL was one of the first companies besides iHome and Denon / Marantz to announce support for Apple's AirPlay technology, so it's no surprise that the company's On Air Wireless speaker dock just hit the FCC, complete with its manual -- we've been hearing that AirPlay will be all over the place at CES 2011.

The On Air Wireless seems like a fancier riff on JBL's On Air line of speaker docks and alarm clocks -- it features that familiar swoopy-loop design but adds in a large color LCD display that displays album artwork while streaming music.

Looking at the manual, the display also makes WiFi setup and configuration a little easier, which is nice. All in all, it looks promising, but we'll see what price and availability looks like when we get to CES.

iOS 4.3 GM Jailbroken Already Using PwnageTool. Here’s A Complete How-To Guide !

Yes you read that right ! The just released iOS 4.3 GM for iPhone 4 has been jailbroken already. The jailbreak though is tethered only for now, which means that you will have to boot it into jailbroken state every time you reboot.

Support for iPad, iPhone 3GS and iPod touches is on the way ! Simply follow the instructions below to jailbreak iOS 4.3 GM on iPhone 4 using a combination of PwnageTool 4.2, Universal Ramdisk Fixer and tetheredboot utility.
Here’s what you will need:
  • PwnageTool 4.2
  • Access to iOS 4.3 GM firmware
  • iTunes 10.2
  • Mac OS X
  • PwnageTool bundle for iOS 4.3 GM
  • Universal Ramdisk Fixer
  • tetheredboot utility
Note:
  • Cydia is fully working on iOS 4.3 GM.
  • It is a semi-tethered jailbreak.
  • Your baseband will not be upgraded during restore process.
Modifying PwnageTool
Step 1: Download PwnageTool bundle for your version of iOS device. Extract the .zip folder, in there you will find a .bundle file, for this guide, we are using iPhone 4 bundle iPhone3,1_4.3_8F190.bundle. Move this file to your desktop.
Step 2: Download PwnageTool 4.2 and copy it to /Applications directory. Right click, and then click on “Show Package Contents” as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and paste iPhone3,1_4.3_8F190.bundle file in this location.

Creating Custom Ramdisk for iOS 4.3 Custom Firmware
Step 4: Download Universal Ramdisk Maker and simply install it as shown in the screenshots below. This is important because Ramdisk in the current version of PwnageTool is broken. This Universal Ramdisk Maker basically patches it correctly for iOS 4.3 firmware.

Building iOS 4.3 Custom Firmware
Step 5: Download iOS 4.3 GM firmware. Move this file to your desktop.
Step 6: Start PwnageTool in “Expert mode” and select your device:
PwnageTool 4.3 (4)
Step 7: Browse for iOS 4.3 GM firmware for your device as shown in the screenshot below:
Jailbreak 4.3 (4)
Step 8: Now select “Build” to start creating custom 4.3 firmware file:
PwnageTool 4.3
Step 9: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone which will be jailbroken.
PwnageTool 4.3 (2)
Step 10: Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode using PwnageTool:
  • Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
  • Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
  • You device should now be in DFU mode

Restore iOS 4.3 Custom Firmware Using iTunes
Step 11: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.
Update iPhone 4 4.2.1 (4)
This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.3 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file that you created above, and click on “Open”.
Step 12: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.3 on your iOS device. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iOS device will be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.
Booting in Tethered Mode
Last but not the least, since there is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3 yet, we will have to boot it into a tethered jailbroken state. To do this, we will make use of a utility named “tetheredboot” as shown in the steps below.
Step 13: Download tetheredboot.zip utility for Mac OS X and extract the .zip file.
Step 14: First, we will need two files from the custom iOS 4.3 GM firmware namely: kernelcache.release.n90 and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu. To do this, make a copy of your custom iOS 4.3 GM file that you created above, change the extension of this file from .ipsw to .zip, and then extract this .zip file.
Now copy kernelcache.release.n90 file, and then copy iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu files which are found under /Firmware/dfu/.
Move all these files, and tetheredboot utility to a new folder named “tetheredboot” on the desktop as shown in the screenshot below.
Jailbreak 4.3 (2)
Step 15: Turn off your iOS device, and start Terminal on OS X and run the following commands:
sudo -s
enter your administrator password, then:
/Users/TaimurAsad/Downloads/tetheredboot/tetheredboot
/Users/TaimurAsad/Downloads/tetheredboot/iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu
/Users/TaimurAsad/Downloads/tetheredboot/kernelcache.release.n90
You will have to of course replace “TaimurAsad” with the name of the directory on your computer.
now press enter.
Jailbreak 4.3 (3)
You should now see some code running in the Terminal window, at some point, it will ask you to enter DFU mode. Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode:
  • Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
  • Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
  • You device should now be in DFU mode
Now wait for your device to boot, Terminal at this point will be showing “Exiting libpois0n” message. After a short while, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will be booted in a jailbroken tethered mode !

Facebook: A Cop's Best Friend

Analysis: If you are in the midst of committing a felony, you may not want to tweet about it or update your status to reflect that.

It's the golden rule of Facebook (and every other social network): If you don't want your online activity to come back and bite you in the assets, don't post anything you wouldn't want your grandmother to see. And if grandma wears a badge and carries a gun, that rule goes double

A story in Wednesday's New York Times adds more teeth to that truism. When investigating a crime, Facebook and Twitter are often the first places the cops look.

When 18-year-old Kayla Henriques fatally stabbed her 22-year-old BFF Kamisha Richards in the chest over a $20 loan, NYC police didn't have to look very hard for motive. It was all there in a message string on Facebook.

[ See also: Meet your new Facebook friend: Johnny Law ]

The classic example, also noted by the Times: In January 2009, when none-too-bright bank robber Joseph Wade Northington posted the following update to MySpace:

"One in the head still ain't dead!!!!!! On tha run for robbin a bank Love all of yall."

Worthington was arrested nine days later and charged with robbing the Security Federal Bank in North August, South Carolina. His current status: Doing 7 years federal time for using a firearm during a crime of violence.

Here's a clue: If you are in the midst of committing a felony, you may not want to tweet about it or update your status to reflect that. Just a thought.

As I've noted before, Facebook is a trove of information for any three-letter agency with an interest in you or your friends. There are dozens of other examples of criminals who've been unearthed because they couldn't keep their traps shut online -- like Mafia don Pasquale Manfredi, who got nabbed by Italian police last March thanks to his Facebook chatter, or escaped convict Craig ‘Lazie' Lynch, who taunted UK police by posting mocking mugshots of his newly liberated self on Facebook. He got caught in January 2010 after four months on the run.

Even if you're not a criminal -- or just criminally stupid -- your Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace posts will likely be used to determine whether you belong on a jury, qualify for alimony, or are considered a fit parent in a custody proceeding. This is not theoretical; it's now a standard part of the discovery process. Call it Law and Order: Geek Squad.

Social networks should come with their own Miranda warning: What you say on Facebook (Twitter, MySpace, etc) can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Remember that, the next time you're tempted to post those wild photos after a long night at Margaritaville or, say, you've robbed a liquor store.

ITworld TY4NS blogger Dan Tynan has a perfectly good alibi when that thing went down the other night, just give him a minute. The rest of you who aren't law enforcement officials can track his whereabouts via eSarcasm (Geek Humor Gone Wild) or follow him on Twitter:@tynan_on_tech.

Lines for iPad 2 Launch Start as 'iJustin' Camps Out Once Again

With the iPad 2 set for launch at 5:00 PM on Friday and Apple not offering pre-orders, those looking to get their hands on the updated tablet device as soon as possible may find themselves facing long waits to secure spots near the front of their respective lines.

And just like with the iPhone 4, Dallas resident Justin Wagoner has already pitched a tent outside his local Apple Store in order to be first in line for the iPad 2 launch on Friday

Apple Working on 64 GB iPhone

M.I.C. Gadget has puplished iPhone 4 prototypes on the chinese "grey market", this prototype shows a 64 GB storage capacity. Actually these images can be easly faked, but the "XX" on the back of the device may represent that the unit is a potential Apple prototype.

If real and not hacked, this 64 GB iPhone 4 most likely represents a storage capacity that Apple decided to abandon for their 4th generation iPhone rather than an upcoming model. On the other hand, Apple released an out of the ordinary 16 GB original iPhone in February 2008 after the initial June 2007 4 GB and 8GB iPhone launches.
